My clients had a beautiful Victorian cottage and orchard set in lovely Kentish countryside but with a neglected garden mainly laid to lawn. Their brief was to create a beautiful cottage garden which would sit very naturally within the stunning landscape all around the cottage. They were keen gardeners and very interested in the cottage plants and colours that could potentially be used.
I decided to terrace the sloping bank behind the cottage creating two wide, long borders made from oak sleeper retaining walls and also included wide, central steps leading up from French doors to the existing orchard.
The area immediately around the cottage was paved with beautiful old bricks to give a large area for entertaining and also included a lawn and lots of scented cottage planting such as box, roses, lavender, rosemary, ceanothus, potentilla, erigeron, astrantia, geraniums, salvia and clematis for year round interest.
