London Courtyard Garden

My clients were having a beautiful new contemporary sitting room built along the side of their kitchen which was leaving a thin strip of previously unused garden. My brief was to create a new stunning garden in this space with areas for seating and lots of cottage planting.

We decided to create a secluded courtyard garden here dividing the area down into two garden rooms which would link well with the existing summerhouse and garden wrapping around the back of the house.

New wide steps lead down into the courtyard which is paved with contrasting blocks of limestone slabs and pavers which help divide the space.

Pleached Hornbeam trees give privacy and many areas of beautiful scented cottage planting soften the area. Four stunning Olive trees and three multi stem Betula give form, structure and strong focal points as you walk through the courtyard.

The planting scheme includes Daphne, Hydrangea, Hebe, Rosemary and Shrub Roses for structure intermingled with bold swathes of Erigeron, Nepeta, Alliums, Geraniums, Astrantia, Cenolophium, Sanguisorba and Verbena giving softness, colour and movement.
