My clients had just moved into a barn conversion and asked me to design a new garden along the back of the house. They wanted to create a sense of privacy with different areas for entertaining along with simple large blocks of planting.
I designed a new intimate courtyard garden here with different areas dividing the space using a mix of stone, brick and gravel materials.
I used blocks of simple planting giving good structure including pleached hornbeam trees, 3 multi stem cornus kousa trees, a mature olive tree, and hebe, daphne, and rosemary evergreen balls. Grasses such as stipa, miscanthus and hakonechloa added texture and movement, and various perennials such as gaura, sanguisorba, verbena, echinacea, geraniums, alliums and nepeta added a long season of interest
