My clients asked me to produce a design for an existing grass bank which ran alongside their kitchen and sitting room. The brief was to create a usable beautiful space with plenty of room for relaxing and outdoor living.
My concept was to create three new terraces cut into the grass bank interconnected by generous wide steps and surrounded by scented planting. The terraces had benches set into the planting from where their beautiful woodland garden and naturalistic pond could be seen. I also placed a large table and chairs into this area. Traditional dry stone retaining walls built from old dressed sandstone retained the three terraces and the paving and steps were formed from old yorkstone and brick. The planting included box balls, cistus, alliums, tulips, astrantia, ferns, hostas, verbena, geraniums and many herbs for the kitchen.
